| << | ![]() A Great Western 14XX engine running as an 'auto-train'. Auto trains were introduced by a number of railways. With these the driver sat in a driving compartment at the leading end of the carriages and controlled the train from there. This cut out the need to run around the train at terminals. This meant that the fireman was alone on the footplate, and had to perform some driving duties, consequently they were paid more to work autotrains.
